Kurt Angle's WrestleMania Matches - From Worst To Best

3. Vs. Chris Benoit - WrestleMania X-7

As far as 'two guys with no story' matches go, it could be argued that this is one of the best in WrestleMania history. Angle didn't have an opponent for WrestleMania X-Seven and was complaining about it, which led to Benoit challenging him and the two going at it on the show. That was it. They would go on to prove that you don't always need a story to put on a great match, and that every now and then sheer wrestling ability is all that is required.

A hot crowd helps of course, and they were heavily into everything the two superstars did here. Angle and Benoit had great chemistry, and it was always fun seeing Angle get increasingly annoyed at Benoit matching (and often topping) his wrestling ability. That happened here, with Benoit getting the best of the opening exchanges, only for Angle to give up on that and punch Benoit square in the mouth. That'll do it.

Just as the two seemed to be hitting their stride the referee took a bump, and Angle picked up the tights-assisted finish soon after. I understand the need to protect both men, especially with WWE viewing to prolong the feud, but the story and credibility that both came with meant that neither would have lost anything regardless of the result.

Want another fun fact? Kurt Angle never wrestled at WrestleMania as a babyface. Seven matches, seven heel performances.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
