Latest On Upcoming Cody Rhodes Heel Turn Rumours (WWE News)
The Rock says...WWE should turn Cody Rhodes heel before the end of 2025.
Fightful Select is reporting that Cody Rhodes isn't currently scheduled to turn heel on WWE television any time soon, but he was pitched to do so. The website said that "those around Rhodes" were firmly against the thought of him going rogue, and cited "the strong gates, merchandising and ticket sales for Cody Rhodes as a babyface".
At the time, Cody was also getting ridiculously strong babyface reactions from live crowds everywhere the promotion went. He did, however, begin to hear some scattered boos before dropping the WWE Title to John Cena at WrestleMania 41. Rhodes didn't draw attention to those during his promos on episodes of Raw or SmackDown though.
The Rock recently caused a stir on Pat McAfee's show by saying WWE could revisit the whole 'Cody selling his soul' idea in the future. Speaking of Dwayne, many fans were left rather upset that he wasn't involved in anything to do with the Rhodes vs. Cena feud after helping JC go rogue at Elimination Chamber: Toronto in early-March.
In fact, Rock was barely mentioned (if at all) on TV, and it was rapper Travis Scott who interfered in the marquee title match instead.
Cody Was Supposed To Get John Cena's Heel Turn?
Fightful's sources within the company said that "they didn’t want to put too much of a spotlight on the situation shortly after Rock’s interview". However, "a number of people were against the idea of turning Cody Rhodes heel".
This wasn't included in Fightful's write-up, but it's worth pondering: Was Cody pretty much pencilled in for the treacherous heel turn Cena worked at Elimination Chamber? If so, just how different would things have been during John's ongoing retirement tour? His frankly stunning decision to finally go heel after decades of brave-facing boos from fans rocked the entire wrestling world, but many generally agree that WWE has failed to come through on properly explaining his motivations for doing so.
Even those who are enjoying heel Cena must be slightly confused as to The Rock's whereabouts. There's been little in the way of context for the relationship between both men, or why Rock went from hating Cody to loving Cody and then hating Cody all over again. It's been pretty messy creatively, and it sounds like that's the way behind the scenes too.
Back to Fightful. They say that Rhodes was pitched a heel turn after all, but either wasn't up for it or was talked out of 'going bad' by those around him due to wildly successful babyface metrics.
