NJPW Wanted Bret Hart On Commentary Before Kenny Omega Recommended Don Callis
Kenny Omega pulled a few string and got his pal Don Callis the NJPW gig instead of Bret Hart.
Bret 'The Hitman' Hart was considered for a role on the NJPW commentary team before Kenny Omega suggested old pal Don Callis for the spot instead.
While speaking to WrestleInn.com, NJPW commentator Kevin Kelly revealed that the promotion were thinking of bringing in the former WWE Champion to call the action for the highly anticipated Omega vs. Chris Jericho match at Wrestle Kingdom 12. Yet, due to the fact that they didn't have the iconic Canadian wrestler's number, the current AEW World Champion jumped in with the suggestion of Callis for the role.
As Kelly noted, it appeared NJPW's thought process was simply "Oh, Canadian!" when landing on Hart as a potential guest commentator. Filling that spot instead with Callis, the Impact co-executive vice president would stick around in NJPW for two years before ultimately joining up with Omega again in AEW.
It would've undoubtedly been awesome to see 'The Hitman' on hand to give his point of view on such an important match in both Canadian stars' careers. But Callis was a more than adequate alternative and his presence set the stage for his current role as Omega's devious manager/confidant.
