Not Even Vince McMahon's Closest Allies Want His WWE Return
Disgraced former Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon will NOT have an easy path back into WWE.
Vince McMahon might be eyeing a WWE return at the moment - but even the 77-year-old's closest allies consider it a horrible idea.
The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week that on top of facing two new legal challenges for alleged acts of sexual assault, McMahon feels he received bad advice to resign as WWE Chairman and CEO in July. Now, the disgraced billionaire wants a comeback, believing the allegations and cases would have blown over had he remained in power.
Dave Meltzer has corroborated the WSJ's information on Vince's desire to return. Reporting on Wrestling Observer Radio, he stated outright that "Vince wants back", noting that McMahon still holds around 80% of WWE's voting rights due to his stock holdings. Despite this, WWE's status as a public company means the Board of Directors would have to consent to any decision on him coming back - and may decide against doing so if they believe it wouldn't be for the best.
A McMahon return would likely cause issues with sponsors, as well as television networks FOX and USA, given the publicity his sexual misconduct allegations have received.
Unfortunately, the comeback rumours have seemingly had a detrimental impact on WWE morale. Meltzer stated that people within the company are now uncertain about what's going on. Vince returning would create major upheaval, but even the 77-year-old's allies, who have been "very protective of [McMahon]" in the past, don't think it would be a good idea. WWE is a happier place now than when Vince was at the helm - and even "very strong allies" of the disgraced former Chairman don't want him back.
Allegations that he had paid tens of millions of dollars to suppress allegations of sexual misconduct forced McMahon to resign from his position in July. Stephanie McMahon and Nick Khan were appointed co-CEOs following this, with Paul 'Triple H' Levesque's ascent to Executive Vice President's status and head of creative completing a high-level executive shakeup.
