Roddy Piper

Right.

1990s Dave Meltzer was as good at his chosen profession as anybody ever, and he deserves that lofty praise for his Montreal Screwjob coverage alone. Every other week of the entire decade, Meltzer was holding the WWF to account, accurately reporting debuts and departures, and otherwise getting almost everything correct. He has paid the price for being so vastly influential, in that he shares the scoops with countless other folks these days. Even people with broadly similar tastes as Dave reckons there can’t be that many four-and-a-half star matches on Collision, Jesus Christ. But 1990s Dave Meltzer was a phenom. All of which is to pay him the proper respect, because he might have dropped a clanger in 1995

In the February 20 edition of the Observer, Meltzer reported that the WWF was bringing in ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper to corner Diesel for the WWF title match main event. Of course, the WWF did bring in Piper, but in the role of special guest referee for Bret Hart Vs. Bob Backlund.

This stemmed from Piper and Shawn Michaels interacting at the Royal Rumble Encore Plus show. Michaels took the piss out of Piper for having a knackered hip; Piper then warned Michaels that Diesel was going to kick his ass. Piper however did not escort Diesel to the ring, which would have been weird. That was the role of Jenny McCarthy.

Because the blatant and desperate idea here was to present Diesel and Shawn Michaels as two cool, hot, sex-havers who you should all want to be - and watch, live on pay-per-view!
