Owen - Hart Of Gold DVD Review: 14 Things You Should Know
1. The Verdict
Ive been staring at my screen wondering how I can put into words how I feel about this release. I remember reading Broken Harts, the book by Martha Hart on her life with Owen and the aftermath of his death. I cried at one point reading it because of how heartbreaking it was. This isnt a woman who misses a wrestler she watched on TV, this was a woman who lost the father of her children and the love of her life at 34 years old.
The WWE have consistently went against Marthas wishes since Owen died. She asked not to do a full tribute show after the manner in which he died, but they did it anyway. She asked to not show funeral footage on RAW, but they did. She asked to not release footage of him on DVD and they did.
Some fans feel entitled to an Owen Hart DVD. The argument is we should be able to celebrate his life and his matches. Most of his stuff is on the WWE Network, so we can do that anyway.
Martha Hart does not endorse or support this DVD. Furthermore, none of the proceeds of the sales are going to a charity like The Owen Hart Foundation, which she set up in his honour. The WWE are 100 per cent profiting from the death of one of their performers. Its that black and white - theres no grey area.
Had Owen Hart not passed away, theyd never have released a DVD set on him, I'm sorry but it just wouldnt have happened.
The documentary overall is very enjoyable to watch as a fan of Owen Hart and there are multiple wrestlers that clearly loved him and miss him, but for me it doesnt change the fact that his widow doesnt support the project and its tacky to release it.
If I were you, Id consider donating your money to charity instead and watch some Owen Hart stuff on the Network (the documentary will be on there soon anyway). Ultimately, it is up to the viewer. For what it's worth, the documentary is certainly a good look at Owens life, the extra features are interesting and entertaining and the match selection is nice and varied.
