Planned WWE Queen Of The Ring Cancelled
Proposed tournament nixed by global circumstances.
WWE's plans to run an all-women tournament in 2020 have been scrapped, with the ongoing health crisis cited as the reason.
According to Bryan Alvarez, speaking on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Live, although the company wasn't going to revive the Mae Young Classic, they did have designs on a 'Queen of the Ring' concept featuring members of their existing female roster. Naturally, the tournament would have followed in the format of the retired King of the Ring concept, possibly ending in a PPV or Network special dedicated to the finals.
Presumably, the winner would then have been handed a comedy monarch gimmick which caused their career to take a nosedive.
In any event, this year's trying circumstances mean it is now off the cards indefinitely. Quite convenient, really; WWE were said to be considering a similar tournament last year, but it never materialised despite the situation allowing it. Likewise, the Mae Young Classic has rested dormant since 2018, and WWE were similarly unable to find room in their calendar last year for a follow up to 2018's Evolution PPV - somewhat suggesting that the all-women show was, in part, an apology for their female-free trips to Saudi Arabia..
