Prior to being ousted from power in WWE (correct at the time of writing, at least), Vince McMahon had a penchant for handpicking a wrestler at random to act as his new golden boy for however long he so wished. Austin Theory was his final selection, becoming McMahon's right-hand man and go-to United States Champion, currently in his second reign with the title.

Predicted next champion: Johnny Gargano.

Triple H wants to change the perception of WWE's secondary championships; this has been paramount to his success as WWE head booker and was evident almost from the offset. For the United States Championship, that meant having Tommaso Ciampa immediately challenge Bobby Lashley for the title, wearing a robe reminiscent of legendary belt holder Harley Race.

Ciampa won't be the next champion, though - he's injured for starters. Instead, it'll be Johnny Gargano.

Although his momentum has halted since his welcomed 22 August comeback in Toronto, the NXT Triple Crown Champion remains a top fixture in the mid-card scene of Monday nights. It won't be much longer until he's strapped up on the main roster, with the United States Championship sure to benefit from a champion of the ilk of 'Johnny Wrestling'.
