After defeating The Rock for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 29, John Cena would issue an open challenge. This ultimately would lead to Ryback turning heel and challenging him because Cena never helped him whenever he was getting beat up against The Shield. Ryback was allowed to choose what match these guys were going to have at Extreme Rules so he chose a Last Man Standing match.

The match itself turned out to be above average. It was a little slow to start but crescendoed well thanks to a series of progressively more intense spots. The ending came after Ryback picked up Cena and ran him through the lights at the top of the ramp. It was an incredibly memorable spot that prompted the crowd to chant "Foley" in respect to how extreme the spot felt.

The match ended in a No Contest even though Cena clearly would not have gotten to his feet in time if the ref did his job after the match and counted him out. The announce team's excuse for why the match was stopped instead of counting Cena out was that the ending was "too extreme." Ryback should have thrown a bigger fit about that.
