John Cena’s 11 WWE SummerSlam Matches From Worst To Best
3. 2005 Vs. Chris Jericho
In the midst of the 2005 brand split, WWE Champion John Cena found himself drafted from Smackdown to Raw. GM Eric Bischoff was none too happy about this, because Cena let it be known that he wasn't about playing politics. Bischoff set up this match with Jericho as the challenger to foil the champ.
The backstory going into Summerslam 2005 is that Chris Jericho was about to leave the company. This was his next to last night in WWE for this run and it was pretty well known. Despite the obviousness that Cena was going to win, they wrestled a match that helped us buy into the idea that Jericho just might pull through in spite of his impending departure.
I'm a little off on exactly when Cena started getting crowd backlash but this match might've been the first real dose of it. One of the most passionate dueling chants I've ever heard erupted during this as the crowd ferociously chanted "Let's go Cena/Let's go Jericho."
The rowdiest point in this match was when Y2J had the Walls of Jericho locked onto Cena. The pro-Y2J part of the crowd really wanted him to win while the pro-Cena populace let it be known that they wanted the champ to retain. Cena ultimately won via FU.
This match was such a fun viewing experience and an important bout in both guys' careers.
