Ranking Edge's WWE SummerSlam Matches From Worst To Best
3. vs John Cena (2006)
2006 was a banner year for Edge, in which everything finally clicked after 10 years’ association with the company. For all his immense popularity, the guy works better as a heel, and he has no finer rival than John Cena.
Edge could never overpower Cena, and lacked the hero’s fortitude and steel. But he could certainly outthink Cena, and here in his rival’s home state, he pilfers an improbable victory through delightfully on-brand means. The stipulation saw champion Edge able to lose his belt should he get disqualified.
For much of the bout he tries to play it straight, and the two display their immense chemistry with great sequences of counters and near falls. But they don’t call Edge The Ultimate Opportunist for nothing, and when he sees the chance, he blasts Cena with the brass knuckles when the ref is distracted and high tails it out of Boston with his belt.
They’d have superior matches, but for a main event early into the headliner careers of both guys, it’s a fast-paced, old school peach.
