Asuka Shinsuke Nakamura Royal Rumble WrestleMAnia
WWE

The Royal Rumble's reputation usually lives or dies on the titular bout's quality. This year, for the first time, we got two of them. Both delivered on completely different levels.

The men's bout was a masterpiece of road-agenting. So well laid-out was this clash that it deserves to be mentioned among 2001 and 1992 as one of the best Rumbles ever, with the closing stretch particularly compelling. Good guys Rey Mysterio, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Finn Balor faced off against a trio of apparent boogeymen in John Cena, Roman Reigns, and Randy Orton. It boiled down to Nakamura vs. Reigns, and after a riveting back-and-forth sequence, Shinsuke's triumph over the company-sponsored golden boy was beautiful.

While the women's wasn't half as smooth, it didn't need to be. This was all about old mixing with new; nostalgia tangling with potential. Though it looked to the past, its primary function was to celebrate all that's great about women's wrestling now, and in Asuka, it delivered another crowd-pleasing victor.

As for the non-Rumble matches? Fine, though some let Jason Jordan's avoidant tactics in his and Seth Rollins' clash with The Bar work them into a shoot.

Best Moment: Asuka and Shinsuke Nakamura winning their respective Rumbles. WWE botched the follow-up, but both felt like fan service.

Worst Moment: Kane fighting for a top WWE title in 2018.
