Much like Paige, Asuka's NXT Women's Championship reign has suffered from a lack of real competition. The Empress of Tomorrow is the longest reigning champion in the history of the belt, but she has been booked as such a dominant champion that it is difficult to take much from her reign. She has shown little in the way of vulnerability in the 279+ days of her run to date.

In those days Asuka has defended her crown against former champion Bayley, Nia Jax, and Mickie James, vanquishing all three fairly easily. Sure, she has been in trouble at times, but trouble for Asuka is nothing to sweat. At no point during her defences has it felt as though the title was truly in jeopardy.

The fact that Asuka has been forced to defend the title against previously unsuccessful challengers (Nia Jax) and returning stars (Mickie James) shows the condition the NXT women's division is in right now. She needs fresh competition, which hopefully she will find in the new year. Until then, her title reign will continue to beunderwhelming.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
