Ranking Every Randy Orton WrestleMania Match - From Worst To Best
7. Rey Mysterio Vs. Kurt Angle Vs. Randy Orton (WrestleMania 22)
In 2006, Randy Orton featured in one of WrestleMania’s more memorable feel-good moments as one-third of a Triple Threat equation that saw Rey Mysterio crowned World Heavyweight Champion.
Hyped by one of the better promo packages we’ve ever been treated to, we had the underdog in Mysterio, fighting for the honour of his deceased friend, the arrogant, despicable heel in Orton who just wanted to spoil the party, and of course the wrestling purist and defending champion in Kurt Angle. The trio duly delivered.
Orton’s pre-match attack on Angle, seizing the world title belt from Charles Robinson and clobbering the champ before the bell rang, got the action off to a flying start. Things never really slowed from there, with Angle re-emerging to nail a massive triple German suplex, Rey Mysterio hitting an assisted top-rope Frankensteiner, and all three men nailing the near-falls to perfection. One criticism may be that at 11 minutes it wasn’t particularly long, but that’s only because the 11 minutes we did see were so fast-paced.
Even though Orton eventually took the pin, he’d nonetheless played a vital role in a cracking world title match and an even more memorable WrestleMania story.
