Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Shawn Michaels - Wrestlemania 14

Shawn Michaels was pushing boundaries as part of D-Generation X, while Stone Cold was reaching new levels of popularity with his never-before-seen anti-heroic character. As the top heel and top face of the company, it only seemed right then that the two men would meet at Wrestlemania XIV for the WWE Championship. Shawn was on his third (and as it would be, last) championship reign, while Austin won the Royal Rumble match to earn an opportunity at the title. All was not right however, as at the same Royal Rumble event, HBK injured his back in a Casket match with Undertaker; an injury that would go on to cost him 4 years of his career. Before Wrestlemania it was announced that Mike Tyson would be the special enforcer for the match, to prevent any interference, but as always in wrestling, it didn't go to plan. Tyson aligned himself with DX, and would fight with Austin in the weeks leading up to Wrestlemania. Despite Shawn's injury, as well as the fact that he wasn't in the best place emotionally, the match went ahead. Shawn is visibly in pain during the match, but it didn't seem to suffer as a result. As the veteran, Michaels was given control of most of the match, which led to the crowd coming alive when Austin eventually made his comeback. After one of the most memorable attempted finisher exchanges in Wrestlemania history, Austin hit the Stunner, and Mike Tyson would side with him, making the three count. This match is one of the better examples of how winning the Royal Rumble and then at Wrestlemania can consolidate a new star, something that's been lacking for the better part of the last decade.
