Despite their obvious talents and enduring popularity, WWE didn't really know what to do with Rob Van Dam and Rey Mysterio in 2004. Rey had been Cruiserweight Champion a bunch of times and Van Dam hadn't made much of an impact since being transferred to Smackdown from Raw in April's Draft Lottery.

As is often the case when WWE don't know what to do with two such talents, they threw them together as a tag team and hoped for the best. The blue brand's doubles scene wasn't exactly amazing at that point, with illustrious teams like Rico & Charlie Haas, Billy Gunn & Hardcore Holly and Kenzo Suzuki & Rene Dupree filling out cards.

Despite the naff nature of some of the opposition, Rey and RVD got good matches out of their mishmash of opponents. They had worthwhile matches with The Dudley Boys (at Judgement Day) and Suzuki & Dupree (No Mercy & Armageddon) and eventually won the WWE Tag Team Titles. Their offense was exciting and their styles meshed very well indeed, making their matches easy to watch and enjoy.

Their bast match as a team was on the final Smackdown of 2004, as they defended their titles against the makeshift (but supremely talented) team of Booker T & Eddie Guerrero. Unfortunately, Van Dam was nursing a knee injury which required major surgery and the team was split up in January.

Before that, though, they were one of the true highlights of Smackdown TV.
