This week on the always excellent Jim Ross podcast, Shawn Michaels joined the show to discuss a number of topics. One of the subjects they talked about was a former protege of Michaels named, WWE Champion Daniel Bryan. As most fans know, Bryan was trained to wrestle by Michaels back in 2000 when Michaels had a wrestling school while he was unsure about his own wrestling future. The subject of a potential Michaels vs. Bryan match came up on the podcast based on what happened at Hell in a Cell 2013. Michaels was the special referee for Bryan's WWE Title match against Randy Orton inside Hell in a Cell (the title was vacant at the time) and he ended up hitting Bryan with a Superkick, which led to Orton getting the pin. Bryan nailed Shawn's best friend Triple H with a running knee prior to the Superkick, so it was considered to be Shawn's revenge on Bryan. A lot of people were surprised by the actions of Michaels because he's been a babyface legend for such a long time that it really did come out of nowhere. During the podcast, Michaels revealed that there were never any plans to have a match with Bryan. People would bring it up to him, but it wasn't the people that make decisions in WWE. Michaels went on to say that aside from costing Bryan the match, there was nothing else planned. He added that he thought it would be a good idea to go out on Raw and have Bryan put him in the Yes Lock, so that's what they did the next night on Raw on October 28. The fans seemed to love it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=slANAE_OgAw It was weird to see Michaels act like a heel during Hell in a Cell and the next night on Raw only to be cheered in his other appearances, but that's how wrestling fans are. They love Michaels. If Michaels did want to return to the ring, he likely would want to wrestle Bryan because he knows he's the best. However, Michaels is nearly 50 years old and hasn't wrestled in four years. He has plenty of money. There's no reason to jump back into the ring. A matchup between Michaels and Bryan is a dream match to a lot of people, but that's likely all it will ever be. Of course, if Michaels changed his mind I doubt most fans would complain about it.
