The Bizarre Tale Of The Misfits In WCW

Sometimes the levels of coincidence involved in show business are astonishing.

On 1 November 1999, WCW’s Monday Nitro was held at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota. That same night, The Misfits were performing in a music club literally across the street from the venue. Vampiro had briefly met the band the prior year in Mexico City, and since he was still looking for someone to step into ICP’s clown shoes, he went across the street, re-introduced himself to the legendary group, and invited them to join him on Nitro that night.

Since Jerry Only and his gang were willing to try anything during this period, they agreed, and with barely any time to prepare, Only, guitarist Doyle, singer Michael Graves, and drummer Doctor Chud were creeping down the aisle to surround the ring during Vampiro’s match against Berlyn and his bodyguard. People were still holding “Bring Back ICP” signs at ringside for the bout, which was a first-round match in a tournament to fill the vacated WCW World Heavyweight Title. The four musicians, fully garbed in their stage gear and monster makeup, surrounded the ring, lurking at the corners, waiting for their time to get involved.

After the ref was knocked down, Berlyn’s bodyguard jumped into the ring to attack Vampiro. Jerry and Doyle intervened by pulling down the top rope, causing the bodyguard to tumble out of the ring. Vampiro followed and clocked Berlyn’s enforcer with a chair to the head. The Misfits were then involved with the match finish, reaching in from ringside to trip Berlyn before holding down his legs to prevent a kick-out while Vampiro pinned him.

The band members were able to perform their spots without embarrassment, although they looked unsure of themselves while doing it. They did look cool heading back up the aisle while celebrating with Vampiro, however.
