9. WrestleMania XXVII: Cody Rhodes Vs Rey Mysterio

Cody Rhodes was so badly utilised by WWE that he eventually jumped ship to become Vince McMahon’s first credible rival promoter in 20 years, but before doing so he put on a criminally underrated midcard match with Rey Mysterio.

Cody had an amazing, old school gimmick as a once-dashing young superstar rendered “disfigured” by a Mysterio attack, and the two had superb chemistry in a well booked feud. The psychology of this match was great, with both wrestlers’ protective equipment - Cody’s face mask and Rey’s knee brace - coming into play as weapons.

The match is zippy, but given enough time to develop. The two would have even better matches later - their falls count anywhere clash at Extreme Rules the same year is great - but giving the up and comer and the reliable pro a decent slot in which to express themselves was the right thing to do.

It helps that XXVII is a questionable ‘Mania, with Lawler vs Cole and the underwhelming Miz/Cena main event bringing it down, but by its own merits this match is a winner, highlighting how badly the WWE squandered Cody Rhodes.
