The WORST Moment From Every WWE WrestleMania
17. The ‘Miss. WrestleMania’ Nonsense (WrestleMania XXV)
Oh, how WWE's attitude towards women's wrestling has changed since 2009. Back then, the Divas (as they were known) broke up more serious segments on shows elsewhere. They were rarely treated with much respect, and titillation or comedy seemed to be the general rule. Case in point: The division's lot at WrestleMania XXV.
Santino Marella, posing as his sister Santina, won the match to be crowned ‘Miss. WrestleMania’. That was only one of the problems with the match, to be fair. None of the women involved meant anything outside maybe Beth Phoenix (who was there near the end and was eliminated last as part of the story with Marella). Also, the Kid Rock mini-concert stuff with the Divas went on too long beforehand, and Sunny was involved but no-one thought to mention her!
The legend was barely even shown on camera, and the commentary team didn't seem to know she was in there trading punches, kicks etc. If they did, then they must've been instructed not to talk about her part in the match. Admittedly, it was brief, but...what an odd call.
Santino, as Santina, was the top story anyway. He was booked to gush with glee as Candice Michelle put the tiara on his head, and the whole thing was a send up of the importance of women's wrestling. Think about it: This was 'Mania, and a chance for the division to showcase its wares in front of millions. Instead, WWE saw fit to put Marella out there for a laugh.
He tried his best, but the Santina gimmick was dire to sit through.
