TNA's 10 Craziest Matches

5. Abyss vs. Sting - Last Rites Match

The year 2007 was a strange year for Abyss. In those 12 months, just on pay-per-vews alone, we saw him compete in a Prison Yard match, a Lethal Lockdown match, a Doomsday Chamber of Blood match, a Monster’s Ball match, a Shop of Horrors match, and a Match of 10,000 Thumbtacks. Poor guy could have used a Pillow Fight Match.

However, none of those gimmicks can come close to replicating his Last Rites match against Sting at Destination X 2007.

This is as best as I can explain it in under four hours: In the storyline, we learned that Abyss shot his father in the back in his youth. But later on we found out he actually didn’t shoot his dad, his mom did, and young Abyss took the blame. Years pass, and Abyss turns on James Mitchell who had been watching out over him. Mitchell vowed revenge, and said his son was coming to get him. That man was Judas Mesias. But then, a swerve on a swerve went down when it turns out Mitchell had two kids. The other one was Abyss!

Wait. So who was shot again? And two scary brothers with an evil manager as a father who pits them against each other...that sounds strangely familiar.

Well, Sting wanted to save Abyss’ soul or something, and battled him in a Last Rites match. Apparently Stinger didn’t mind killing his opponent as his method of saving him, when he bashed him over the head with a candelabra, forcing Abyss to smash his head through a tombstone. Sting then put him in a casket, where the two raised up to the ceiling together as the crowd chanted "Fire Russo!" Sting and Abyss were never seen again...until the next episode of Impact.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
