The Ultimate Warrior: His 10 Best Matches

5. Ultimate Warrior vs. "Ravishing" Rick Rude - SummerSlam 1989

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NESY1J8fW7A The Ultimate Warrior was rapidly rising up the card in 1989 and the reigning Intercontinental champion Rick Rude stood in his way. Rude and the Warrior actually engaged in a long, drawn-out feud that started at the 1989 Royal Rumble where Warrior defeated Rude in a "Pose Down". Rude attacked Warrior after losing the contest, starting a rivalry that led to a match at WrestleMania V. At WrestleMania, Rick Rude defeated the Ultimate Warrior when manager Bobby Heenan hooked the Warrior's foot on a suplex attempt and held him down for a pin. To say that people were shocked that Warrior lost the Intercontinental title would be an understatement. However, at SummerSlam, Warrior had the best match of his career to that point. Rude and Heenan were at their heelish best and Warrior responded by bringing the crowd to its feet by press slamming Rude to the arena floor. Warrior actually showed some wrestling moves beyond clotheslines and punching during this match, contributing to this match being better than his previous offerings. Rude appeared to be in control after hitting a piledriver but Roddy Piper made his way to ringside. Rude jawed with Piper, giving Warrior the time to recover and, when Rude turned his attention back to his opponent, Warrior was waiting with a flying shoulderblock. One press slam and big splash later, the Warrior was a two-time Intercontinental champion and the Warrior found an opponent he had real chemistry with.
