Sports reporter Jon Alba said on Twitter that WWE currently has no plans to host fans at Tropicana Field for the 2021 Royal Rumble.

The company were rumoured to be exploring that option as far back as November 2020, but Alba has confirmed with sources that the 31 January pay-per-view will be crowd-less. This is likely something most people suspected, but it's nice to have it confirmed.

This also means the 2021 Rumble will be the first ever to take place without a live audience.

The depressing thing there is that WWE's 2020 version was one of the hottest atmospheres in living memory. Fans in Houston's Minute Maid Park popped big for the 'Road To WrestleMania' kick off, and they were treated to memorable moments like Edge's return to action and Drew McIntyre's emotional Rumble success.

Folks watching via the tried-and-tested ThunderDome LED screens will have to try and replicate that commotion in a few weeks.

Alba noted in his write up that WWE are hamstrung by the ongoing pandemic. Again, this is hardly something that will come as a shocker to fans - still, it would've been lovely to have some natural ambience for the Rumble.
