Why Kenny Omega Is NOT The 2021 Wrestler Of The Year

WWE Survivor Series 2021 Roman Reigns Big E

Listen to Nick Khan. Really listen to him.

Vince McMahon's latest right hand man has made it as clear as McMahon himself ever did about what WWE exists for in 2021, and it's not the company's middle initial. Khan would extend Monday Night Raw if he could, unbothered by how abysmal the weekly three hour shows are.

Roman Reigns might be the 'Head Of The Table', but the table's empty. Or it's broken. Or it's a f*cking chair. WWE's inability to be a high functioning wrestling company undermines his ability to be a high functioning wrestler. The character was brand spanking new in 2020, and matches with Jey Uso specifically seemed to reflect an untapped skillset in the former 'Big Dog'.

But this has been exposed in 2021.

It's important to acknowledge (!) the quality of the exceptional WrestleMania 37 main event, but more on that on the next page. In the meantime, stacking up Reigns' matches like his 'Show Of Shows' opponents is about as damaging an argument as it gets for the Universal Champion.

ThunderDome clashes with Kevin Owens, Cesaro and Rey Mysterio were enjoyable without ever approaching awesome. The return of crowds brought about major matches with Edge, John Cena, Finn Bálor and Brock Lesnar, but a failure to divert from a tired formula rendered them all copy-and-paste in tone, style and execution. Said tropes were laid bare in a hugely disappointing Survivor Series main event against Big E that saw more fans than ever querying the genuine effectiveness of his long title tenure. There's nobody on Reigns' level, but if his matches aren't even hot, it brings into question what that level even is.

There's a common denominator opponent between Reigns AND Omega missing from the above lists though, and it's in recalling his two scorchers with 'The Tribal Chief' specifically that we land upon the year's undisputed best in the business.
