Why SummerSlam 1992 Is The Greatest WWE PPV Of The “Golden Era”

5. Shawn Michaels Vs. Rick Martel

For me, this match is one of the absolute highlights on the card. Wrestling is full of feuds and angles that often stretch the limits of my suspension of disbelief (and being a wrestling fan, it stretches quite far!), but there are few things that feel as legitimate as two guys fighting over a woman. It's been happening since the dawn of time.

The run up to the match was great. Michaels screwing Martel out of the IC title. Martel making, seemingly well received, advances towards Sherri. This had grudge match written all over it. Then the inclusion of the 'No hitting in the face' stipulation, which I've always felt is genius for a pair of arrogant prima-donnas.

Sherri's ridiculous fainting spot when they start punching each other in the face is so over the top that it makes it great. What's even better is what follows, with Michaels and Martel going hammer and tongs at each other, before with Michaels seemingly saves Sherri only for Martel to dowse her with a bucket of water. It's hard not to love.
