Quick, when was the last time a reigning titleholder won a non-title match?

Earlier on, this had indeed been billed as a match for the tag titles, but that plan was changed as the big day approached. Presumably, WWE were originally going to have the New Day retain at 'Mania, before coming up with an alternate finish that made use of the surprise guests they were to have on hand.

Of course, trotting out HBK, Foley and Austin for a couple of minutes doesn't justify having the titles changing hands especially not from a proven money-maker to a widely panned band of mid-card misfits.

The non-title stipulation is a dead giveaway; the only real question in this contest was how exactly the finish was going to play out.

This match made perfect sense, and frankly it managed to make the League mildly interesting for a few fleeting moments. That's called a win.
