Wrestlers With The Most World Titles (Across All Major Federations)
21. Keiji Mutoh (8)
4 IWGP Heavyweight Championships
3 Triple Crown Heavyweight Championships
1 NWA Championship
The Great Muta is without a doubt the most memorable gimmick in the history of puroresu, with the possible exception of Tiger mask and Jushin Liger. Keiji Mutoh undertook the role when WCW manager Gary Hart billed him as The Great Kabuki's son, and achieved durable success with it throughout his career, both nationally and abroad.
Switching between his Muta and Mutoh monikers, à la Finn Bálor with The Demon but more frequently, he would become one of NJPW's most popular wrestlers in the 90s, forming the dominating Three Musketeers stable with Masahiro Chono and Shinya Hashimoto. He was the first of the three to win the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in 1992, and (profusely) bled his way to three more world title wins before the turn of the millennium.
The next decade saw him make the move to AJPW (as president and full-time wrestler) and adorn his trophy cabinet with some Triple Crown belts. His final bow as a world champion came in 2008, when he took the Triple Crown title from Suwama, having already dispossessed Shinsuke Nakamura of the IWGP strap earlier that year. His dual champion run would end at Wrestle Kingdom III in 2009, when he went down to Hiroshi Tanahashi after 30 minutes, granting New Japan's rising ace one of the biggest wins of his career thus far.
