9. Lillian Garcia - Episode 92

Austin introduces the Raw ring announcer by insisting she will add "class and prestige" to the show. And that she does, as Lillian demonstrates an easygoing grace and humility while describing her interesting life leading up to a career in the ring. They kick things off though by swapping thoughts on life in LA, as they live quite close to each other there. We get Steve's philosophies on bicycle safety, and navigating the back-roads of the big city. Lillian talks about being hit by a car while working out in a parking lot, a sombre story that she lightens by also sharing tales of major pratfalls on her way to the ring. She was an army kid who spent her childhood in Spain, then got into the broadcast business by several twists of serendipity. You'll be surprised by her first day on the job at WWE, and how she managed to pull it together despite numerous obstacles. Throughout their chat, Austin shows himself to be thoughtful and observant. He asks meaningful questions, proving that he's not only done his homework, but is also good at reading people. For her part, Lillian is humble and sweet. She's happily taken lots of bumps, and got doused with Austin beer bashes more times than either of them could count (revealing also that she doesn't even like beer, a surprise to Stone Cold, who is impressed by her good nature about it!). Lillian also talks about her singing career, and gives some moving examples of what it's been like to sing the anthem for the military and on the first live show on American television after 9/11. On a personal note, I attended the Royal Rumble PPV in Pittsburgh this year, and approached Lillian for a photo before the show. She was all smiles and apologized, saying that she was not allowed to do so until after the show. I elected not to approach her thereafter, as a crowd had formed, but Lillian held true to her word and posed for a lot of pictures. Thanks for being such a class act, Lillian!
