3. Warrior Destroys Honky Tonk Man At Summerslam 88
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzmWjqzOtfk I think the Brother Love beating was meant to somehow evoke this classic match, as Warrior proved to finally be the one to outsmart Honky Tonk Man through sheer brute force. Whereas every other futile challenger to Honkys Intercontinental title tried to outthink him by rigging the game with no-DQ matches and no-countout matches and every other gimmick for Honky to escape, Warrior just used the element of surprise. For those who had endured 18 long months of Honky Tonk Man escaping with the title by the seat of his pants and cheating every babyface out of it, this was sweet justice and the first sign that the WWF meant business with the Warrior. It was the perfect payoff, with the arrogant champion finally coming to the end of the road because he was stupid enough to demand anyone as an opponent, and Warrior kicking the crap out of him in response to win his first title. This match made me so, so very happy as a young man, and I still love watching it today. Honky sells his beating like a man to put over Warrior, and Warrior celebrates like a kid in a candy store for the first time. The fans knew they had found their hero.
