5. Bret Calls Out Vince
An unprecedented promo, this Bret Hart tirade against Vince McMahon helped to foreshadow the Attitude Era. McMahon wasn't even officially recognized as Chairman yet, he was still seen as just the weekly commentator. That made it seem all the more real when Bret started going off on McMahon, pushing him down with force and giving him a verbal barrage. "This is bulls*it," Bret blasts, "you screw me, everyone screws me." The Hitman goes on to talk about how he should be given more recognition, as Jim Ross apologies on commentary for this unexpected occurrence. Vince McMahon meanwhile plays his role brilliantly, looking a mixture of shocked and furious at Bret. "You keep turning a blind eye to me," Bret rages at McMahon. "Cut him off," Jim Ross demands on commentary. In the age where kayfabe was starting to show cracks, this was one of the first epic worked shoot angles. Some fans knew that McMahon was the real owner of the WWF, so it seemed like Bret really was going off script when he started speaking to Vince like he was the man holding him back. Way before CM Punk, Bret Hart was laying the first pipe bomb in the McMahon empire.
