WWE: 10 Drug Scandals Wrestling Didn't Want You To Know About

10. British Bulldog "Was Messed Up On Crack" At Time Of Summerslam 92 Classic

bret hart vs british bulldog Bret Hart vs Davey Boy Smith at Summerslam 92 was one of the very best matches of the early 90s. In front of a very loud UK crowd, 80,000 patriotic fans packing out Wembley, Smith beat Hart in an absolutely superb wrestling match. It was a match that was far ahead of its time, wrestled at a quick pace with slams, submissions, mat wrestling and flying. Even in the modern day this masterpiece would be considered a match of the year contender. This makes it all the more remarkable that match winner Davey Boy Smith "was messed up on crack" at the time. That is according to the man who Smith beat at the event, Bret Hart. The Hitman revealed in his 2007 autobiography that "Neidhart and Smith had smoked crack all night before boarding the plane to England." Bret claims that Smith has been messed up all year with hard drugs. The Hitman states that Smith was "messed up" during the actual Summerslam match, and forgot the entire plan upon getting into the ring. Bret then presses the idea that he carried the match and had to save the day. It is hard to believe Bret's assertions he fully carried the match. That sounds more like Bret's famous ego pitching in. The pace and moves were so frenetic that Davey Boy must have been able to carry his own end. One thing for sure, Smith did have one of the hardest drug battles in WWF history. And it wasn't just recreational drugs. Smith was released from his WWF contract at the end of 92 due to the abuse of human growth hormone, and his muscular body was completely un-natural for a man of his stature. Smith died in 2002 aged 39. The cause of death was heart attack, and years of recreational drug abuse mixed with steroids are thought to have been a contributing factor. Smith's drug abuse had got really bad before his passing. His wife divorced him in 2000, and Davey entered rehab at the expense of Vince McMahon. It wasn't enough. One of the best wrestlers of the 90's died way too soon, at only 39 he could have arguably gone on to be a world champion in the decade 2000-2010. A tragic shame.
