WWE: 10 Greats Who Never Won The Royal Rumble

1. Macho Man Randy Savage

Randy Savage There are few wrestlers who combine incredible charisma with incredible wrestling technique. The Macho Man Randy Savage was one of the few to combine both. He is one of the most captivating men ever to set foot in the ring, equally adept at playing the people's hero or their villain. One day he will surely take his place in the Hall of Fame alongside the other greats. Randy Savage will forever be associated with his run in the WWE, his two WWE Championship reigns being the jewels in the crown. Savage entered six Rumble matches (though he only made it to the ring 5 times), and has lasted a total of 58 minutes overall. Like many others he has never won the Rumble. Savage didn't have the best of times in the Rumble match itself. Perhaps the most embarrassing of his failures to win was in the 1993 Royal Rumble. Yokozuna was being pushed as a monster heel, a Polynesian sumo wrestler who could destroy everything in his path. Weighing in at nearly 600 pound Yokozuna was certainly a visual spectacle, but the manner in which he eliminated the Macho Man was a farce. Savage landed his signature elbow drop, and went to pin the prone sumo star, only for Yokozuna to kick out with such force that Randy Savage was flung over the top rope. Yes, you did read that correctly. Randy Savage decided that he was going to try and win by pinfall in the Rumble. Not only did that make Savage look like an idiot who didn't understand how a Rumble works, but the spot itself looked awful. Yokozuna didn't have the strength to propel Savage over the top rope, so Randy just seemed to spring up and throw himself out the ring. This looked ridiculous, and didn't make Yokozuna look like the monster that WWE hoped. This wasn't the Savage's first bizarre Rumble moment; in 1992 (generally considered one of the best Rumble matches of all time) Randy decided to leap over the top rope at his arch-enemy Jake Roberts. This wasn't a moment of scripted brilliance, with Randy more interested in revenge than winning the WWE Championship; Savage just forgot the rules and got back into the ring. The referees and commentators pretended this was all fine, but the fans were left bemused. However these moments do not detract from the Superstar that Randy Savage was. His lack of wins in this event is not quite a disgrace, but is certainly a shame for someone of his appeal and in-ring quality to have never won the event. His legacy is not necessarily harmed by having not won the Rumble, but it is certainly an oddity that a Superstar the calibre of Randy Savage never went all the way. Which Rumble could they have won: 1993. This would have been the Rumble to see Savage go over. He still had a good run in him, but by Wrestlemania the WWE was using Savage as a commentator; such a waste of an asset. Savage could have won the Rumble in 1993 and gone on to face Bret Hart at Wrestlemania, a match more likely to be remembered than Hart vs Yokozuna.
