WWE: 10 Moments From The PG-Era That Made You Mark Out

10. The King Almost Gets The Crown

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tua2IDlpj04 The Miz had only won the WWE Championship the previous week after cashing in his Money in the Bank contract on Randy Orton but he was viewed as a weak champion so when he defended it against wrestling legend turned commentator Jerry Lawler it was a believable challenge. On the night of 61st birthday this was the first time Lawler had ever had a shot at the WWE Championship. It should be a forgone conclusion then, new champion versus (semi) retired Hall of Famer? But as Lawler evened the field by putting Miz's protégée Alex Riley through a table and then later Miz himself, there was no-one left to stop him as he climbed the ladder towards the title. The fans in attendance were on their feet at the idea of witnessing all kinds of history as King found his bearings and began to climb the ladder while his broadcast partner Michael Cole attempted to wake the champion at ringside. It wasn't to be, as Cole left Miz to stop Lawler himself and end the dreams of the fans. But for the amount of time between Miz falling through the table and Cole grabbing King's leg fans all around the world were starting to believe that they might just be watching the crowning of the oldest WWE Champion of all time and one hell of a birthday present from WWE to their long-serving employee.
