WWE: 10 Most Undeserving WrestleMania Wrestlers Of The Last Decade

5. WrestleMania 23 - The New Breed (vs. The ECW Originals)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dZXoMWG-iE I can understand the sentiments behind this choice: the company wanted to lend a higher profile to its fairly new C-list program, ECW. Cobbled together from the dregs of Paul Heyman's ECW and the development outfit known as OVW, the roster would only have been familiar to die-hard fans. For the majority of WrestleMania viewers, most if not all of these guys would have left them scratching their heads, something you do not want people doing at your biggest show of the year. I will concede that The ECW Originals were deserving of a WrestleMania moment, such were their contributions to sports entertainment in general, even if not WWE specifically. Especially given that this crew (Tommy Dreamer, Rob Van Dam, Sandman, and Sabu) were in the twilight of their careers, and probably wouldn't garner another chance to shine on the big stage. But The New Breed - positioned as upstarts who dared to challenge the veterans - consisted of, well, upstarts, who inspired no confidence or excitement whatsoever. Kevin Thorn had a short-lived stint as a vampire known for openly tonguing his valet; Elijah Burke had a more respectable run on several programs, and did not tongue anyone; Matt Striker may be the most recognizable name today, but more for being a commentator, and often for being dislikeable; Marcus Cor Von had a terrible name, and a career that could be equated to the sound of someone passing gas. Their wrestling didn't hold up either, especially in this stadium setting. While they positioned it as a palate cleanser between marquee matches, it failed to refresh. If they wanted to showcase ECW, I would have recommended a 1-on-1 match between their best talents.
