WWE: 10 Wrestler Insider Terms Explained

6. Over

Being over is a great thing for a wrestler. It means that the fans are responding well to the character they are portraying, and it's very likely that management will continue to promote the character through the various avenues of entertainment marketing. Right now, Triple H is over as a heel authority figure. The fans are booing him, and they want to see another wrestler take him down in the ring. Sometimes certain wrestlers are over in one demographic, but not in another. John Cena's character is over with children, but much less so with adults in their thirties and forties. Another way that the term over is used is when one wrestler puts over another. This means that a wrestler is going out there to make the other wrestler look great in the ring. This is often done with veteran wrestlers who want to help make upcoming Superstars look good so that the fans show their support. When Chris Jericho faced Fandango at WrestleMania 29, he put Fandango over by losing to him so that the fans believe that Fandango is a credible contender. A wrestler can also put his or her opponent over by selling a move or spot so dramatically that it makes the one performing the move look like a legitimate threat. Part of an announcer or interviewer's job is to put the wrestlers over by discussion how good or bad the wrestling is based on the actions committed earlier in the show, or on a previous episode. There are a number of different ways to be put over, and if a wrestler finds himself in a position of being put over, it's expected that one day that same wrestler will also put over another wrestler in order for the business to continue having stars that the fans want to see perform.
