WWE: 10 Wrestler Insider Terms Explained

4. Push

Ah, the push. It's something that all wrestlers want to have, and it's the most effective way to make sure that said wrestler gains momentum and leans towards having a high position on the roster of the main show. When a wrestler gets pushed, it's a decision made by the bookers to either reward a wrestler's hard work over the years, or to simply appease the fans who want to see the spotlight shined on a particular individual. While the bookers can make or break a wrestler, it's ultimately up to the fans to decided whether or not the push is going to wind up having a positive or negative outcome. Sometimes a push only lasts for a handful of matches while other times a wrestler can go on a long winning streak that puts him or her close to title contention. Zack Ryder wasn't taken seriously by management back in 2010, but thanks to the fan reaction to Ryder's YouTube show, he was pushed in 2011 to win the WWE United States Championship. Sometimes management will try to push a wrestler even if the fans don't like them. Then is called pushing down the fans' throats, and it usually never any good. The idea is to give a wrestler so many wins and have so many people put him over that eventually the fans will give in and start cheering for the individual. John Cena is a great example of a wrestler who got pushed over and over again despite the negative reactions he received. Eventually Cena got popular enough to become the face of WWE, and while many fans still boo Cena, there are a ton more who pay to see him perform.
