When a wrestler turns, that means that the character has undergone a significant change in behavior and personality. This usually means that the character has gone from a babyface to a heel, or vice versa. Often the turn comes when a wrestler is ready to branch out from a tag team or a stable and is ready to be off on their own as a singles competitor. An example of this is when Randy Orton won the World Heavyweight Championship and, after being kicked out of the heel faction Evolution by a jealous Triple H, became a babyface that the fans could cheer for. The most famous example of a wrestling turn is when Hulk Hogan turned heel at Bash at the Beach 1996 and formed the NWO along with Scott Hall and Kevin Nash. After the turn, Hogan changed his look to wearing black attire and growing out the stubble on his face. Often when a turn takes place, the wrestler will go through physical changes to their clothes, their hair, or even their makeup in order to promote the fact that they're not the same character they once were. Heel turns don't apply to just the wrestlers either. In the past, managers, announcers, and even referees have gone through heel and face turns depending on the storyline. Turns can occur at any place and at any time in professional wrestling. The best turns tend to occur when the fans least expect it. Screw job turns are a great way to start off a heel turn in the right path with the fans being vehement that outside interference, or a prop brought into the ring, caused the heel to win against the babyface. On special occasions, a double turn will take place where the face turns into a heel and the heel turns into a face. Most everyone points to Bret Hart versus Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13 as a prime example of a double turn. Sometimes turns end up not being successful, and someone who was turned into a heel may turn back into a face weeks later. Many wrestlers go through dozens of turns throughout their careers, and the good guy of today may very well be the bad guy of tomorrow.
