WWE: 11 Loudest Crowd Reactions In WCW History

6. Lex Luger's WCW Title Win Over Hulk Hogan (August 4, 1997)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MEuQRggqU7A It wasn't just Sting that WCW pushed as a top contender to Hulk Hogan's World Title in 1997. Lex Luger got his chance to be in the spotlight too. There was a moment late in their match where Hogan hit his patented leg drop and Luger was able to kick out of it. When Hogan tried the leg drop again, Luger was able to move out of the way. Then Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and Randy Savage (Hogan's NWO buddies) all showed up. Luger got rid of them. When Luger put Hogan in the Torture Rack submission hold, Hogan gave up and Luger became the WCW World Champion. The crowd went crazy for it. Then other babyface members of the WCW locker room showed up to celebrate with Luger. It was one of those genuine moments in wrestling where everybody was happy for the guy that won. Why was it such a big deal? Because Hogan won the title back on August 10, 1996. This match was on August 4, 1997. Hogan had a 359 day WCW World Title reign, so it was a combination of Luger being a good babyface at that that time and the end of Hogan's long WCW World Title reign. In typical WCW fashion, the title reign was short as Hogan won it back less than a week later, but for that night it was about Lex Luger as the new WCW World Champion that was a hero to others in the WCW locker room. A great moment and title change live on Nitro.
