WWE 13 - A-Z Of THQ's Return To The Attitude Era

E is for Epic

Epic is pretty much what we expect this game to be. Given THQ's history within the WWE wrestling genre and as past games have proven, WWE 13 is likely to be the best yet as THQ have recently found a knack for improving themselves year on year. Each year the developers have edited and tweaked the franchise, from introducing new gameplay options to reworking the entire game itself, each amendment has given players a new, exciting gaming experience and this year is expected to be no different. In some ways WWE 13 will be so epic that it is really two games in one... a WWE game with content you would expect to be released in 1999 and a sequel to WWE 12 that features contemporary storylines and modes. Two for the price of one and twice as big as WWE 12.

F is for Franchise

THQ have been entertaining us with their wrestling titles on almost a yearly basis for the past 15 years, starting with WCW World Tour on the Nintendo 64 and then attaining the WWE license where they gave us the critically acclaimed titles WWF Wrestlemania 2000 and No Mercy. It was these two additions which were the real launch pad for the current franchise. Moving away from the N64 and focusing on Sony's Playstation console, it was here we were introduced to the Smackdown series which after a slow start, soon released the pinnacle of the genre at the time with "Here Comes The Pain" but then got stale very quickly. Last year THQ did a complete re-vamp of their franchise, developing the game in all areas and taking it just a little further and they have now managed to create an exceptional franchise for wrestling fans around the world. WWE 13 is now the Madden or the FIFA of its sport and can only get better from here.

G is for Gameplay

Fluid motions, easily adapted controls with new animations and transitions all built on its Predator Technology, THQ has ensured that WWE '13 has taken the necessary steps to offer its fans the gameplay they desire. The Smackdown series had always been known for its simplistic and easy to grasp game controls, as each year has passed the move set has been tweaked and built upon, allowing for more accessibility within the ring and outside, whilst ensuring that the controls remain intuitive. Moves are no longer limited to a few touches of the controller. In essence it has evolved with the rest of the game, giving the player a more realistic and broader feel when playing. WWE 12 was the best gameplay in a wrestling game since WWF No Mercy and to think the follow-up to that game is now only a few months away is very exciting indeed.
