WWE: 13 Most Horribly Offensive Gimmicks Wrestlers Ever Took On

1. Virgil The Manservant

Virgil is the most famous gimmick that was used by Mike Jones, who also went by the names Vincent, and Shane in WCW. Virgil was introduced in the WWF in the 1980s as The Million Dollar Man's bodyguard, but very soon the relationship really didn't resemble that of a bodyguard. Ted Dibiase would have Virgil hold the ropes for him, carry things for him was routinely humiliated by his employer. Eventually Virgil would fight back, but this storyline was clear in its intent. Virgil was a black slave to the white Ted Dibiase. Like some other examples on this list it can be argued that the WWE is fine to tackle serious issues within the subtext of its programming, and more often than not the faces will triumph over the heels, but that doesn't stop angles such as this offending people along the way. The WWE is both a sport and a soap and whilst race, gender and sexuality issues wouldn't be tolerated in a sport the soap aspect of the WWE means they probably will always be exploited to some degree. But to do in such a weirdly blatant fashion €“ such was the case with Virgil €“ was going just a bit too far.
