William Regal was WWE European Champion at the time of McMahon's speech, but dropped the belt to Jeff Hardy two weeks later. He'd go on to hold the Hardcore Championship, before forming The Un-Americans with Lance Storm, Christian, and Test later in 2002.

The Englishman remained a constant presence on the WWE midcard over the next few years, and eventually became Raw General Manager. A major push looked to be on the horizon when he won the 2008 King Of The Ring tournament, but a failed drug test soon put an end to that. Regal remained under WWE employ despite this, and is still with the company today.

His career started winding down in 2011, when he became FCW's colour commentator. Thus began his lengthy affiliation with WWE's developmental system, which escalated when he was made NXT General Manager in July 2014 and, behind the scenes, a talent scout of immense acumen. Regal remains in this role today, while also playing a key backstage role in scouting potential new signings, and training the company's young hopefuls at the Performance Center.

Regal's last match came in November 2013, but while he has never officially retired, his in-ring career is very much over.
