Few fans expected to see Kassius Ohno back in WWE when he was released from his contract in late 2013 because, well, why would they have let him go in the first place? He had flashes of greatness while in NXT, but there were constantly rumblings that his physique wasn't up to par and there were no plans to call him up to the main roster.

Instead of falling off the face of the earth upon leaving NXT, he instead returned to the independent scene with a bang as Chris Hero and chose to prove the powers that be in WWE wrong by contesting classics all over the world.

It should also be noted that NXT was far from what it is today at the time he was released. In 2016, they were a whole different breed, and it was no surprise they reached out to him.

No more than a month later did he resurface in NXT and pick up right where he left off as an NXT Championship contender. He's largely been utilized as a stepping stone for the younger talents since then, which is fine given he is a consummate professional when it comes to making everyone else look great.
