WWE: 6 Most Controversial Old School Gimmicks That Are Unacceptable In 2014

2. Goldust (Androgynous Male)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUYH3udlZ18&hd=1 I know Goldust is wrestling right now, but this isn€™t the Goldust that appeared in 1995. He was marketed as a character that was meant to push people€™s level of comfort. Goldust was the perfect character to straddle the line of homosexuality, at a time where it was less common. He sent Razor Ramon flowers, tattooed €œRAZOR€ on his own chest, and freaked out fans legitimately in the process. Adrian Adonis had been done in the 80€™s, but Goldust was something else. The presentation of the blonde wig, gold bodysuit, face paint, and overly sexual nature created interest, disgust or sometimes fear in the audience. I remember being at a house show in 1996, Goldust threatened to go in the audience and kiss everyone there if they did not shut up. Being a seven year-old who was terrified of this bizarre individual, I kept the noise down enough to make Ravishing Rick Rude nod his head in approval. Goldust is currently experiencing an amazing career rebirth. His matches are top notch, and his character has become something fans have gravitated to. (The androgynous side isn€™t played up so much anymore) Conversely, if we dropped 1995 Goldust into 2014, I believe his character would be met with indifference. Society is much more accepting of homosexuals than it was in 1995, and the fear WWE was able to tap into, would not exist as much in this era.
