WWE: 7 Most Hyped Wrestlemania Main Events Of All Time

4. Hulk Hogan vs Andre The Giant - WWE Championship - Wrestlemania III

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igdPdtv8TI8 Hulk Hogan vs Andre the Giant at Wrestlemania III wasn't just one of the biggest pro wrestling matches of all time, it was one of the biggest events of all time. 93,137 fans crammed into the Pontiac Silverdome to witness the Hulkster take on The Giant. Similar to Batista vs Triple H, this match was built very slowly and carefully. On the January 17, 1987 episode of "Piper's Pit", Hulk Hogan was presented with a trophy for going three years as WWE Champion. Andre the Giant came out to seemingly congratulate his long time best friend, but ominously just said, "Three years as a champion is a long time," and then gave Hogan a handshake that seemed a little too strong. The following week on The Pit, Andre The Giant was presented with a slightly smaller trophy for being the only undefeated wrestler in WWE history. Hulk Hogan came out to congratulate Andre, and in the middle of Hogan putting over the big man for all his tremendous work, Andre oddly walked off the set. Hogan just described it as Andre being "modest". By early February, the subtleties were over. Andre blatantly turned on his long-time best friend on Piper's Pit, shoving him down, and tearing off his crucifix. He declared that notorious bad guy manager Bobby "The Brain" Heenan was now in charge of his career, and he challenged Hogan to a title match. The Wrestlemania III main event was an easy sell. Either Hogan's illustrious three year reign would end, or Andre the Giant would actually suffer a loss. The WWE was at its peak popularity during this time, and top star Hulk Hogan was on the cover of Sports Illustrated, "The Tonight Show" with Johnny Carson, his own cartoon, and millions of lunch boxes across America. This mega main event only solidified WWE as an integral part of 1980s American pop culture. As mentioned, the match was perhaps the biggest match of all time, and the closing seconds of the bout, when Hogan slams the 500 pounder, are etched into sports-entertainment lore as one of the greatest moments in professional wrestling history.
