WWE Chairman Vince McMahon Countersues Former XFL Commissioner
Former XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck sued Vince McMahon back in April.
According to USA Today, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon is countersuing former XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck's lawsuit from back in April of last year.
The countersuit claims that Luck deliberately defied the wrestling icon's orders in regards to hiring specific personnel for the XFL. On top of this, McMahon has also stated that Luck pretty much abandoned his duties as the pandemic hit and resulted in the league having to suspend all play in March of 2020. This was just five weeks into the XFL's relaunch season.
A key point made in the countersuit focuses on how McMahon feels Luck did not heed his warnings when it came to the signing of former NFL star Antonio Callaway for the Tampa Bay Vipers. Coming into the relaunch, McMahon had stressed that he wanted only "quality football players with good character", and, in his mind, Callaway didn't fit the bill in that respect due to his previous violations for substance abuse and credit card fraud whilst playing in the NFL.
With Callaway eventually suffering a knee injury just before the XFL season kicked off, the league was forced to give him worker's compensation pay. The league was also unable to terminate his contract unless they wanted to fork out the $120,000+ original signing on bonus in his contract.
This has all resulted in McMahon seeking $572,792.10 from Luck in order to cover the costs of Callaway's contract, his worker's compensation owed to him, and Luck's own compensation from March 14 to April 9.
It was noted back in December that Luck was confident he'd win his wrongful termination lawsuit against McMahon, with the former XFL Commissioner asking a Connecticut federal judge to order the WWE Chairman to set aside $23.8 million to pay for Luck's potential award from the lawsuit. However, you can likely expect a few more twists and turns before this XFL conflict is resolved.
