WWE Elimination Chamber 2017 Main Event Announced

The champ versus five other contenders!

WWE Smackdown commissioner Shane McMahon promised to kick Tuesday's Smackdown off with a major announcement, and he did just that.

Though the Royal Rumble is still more than a week away, McMahon announced that two weeks after the Rumble, Smackdown would host the Elimination Chamber PPV, and that the WWE Champion would defend his title in the match.

Needless to say, that didn't sit well with WWE Champion AJ Styles, who was infuriated about having to defend his championship against five other men. Styles, of course, is not guaranteed to be defending the title at the show, given that he'll be facing John Cena at the Royal Rumble with the championship on the line, but his point was valid.

From 2008 to 2014, the Elimination Chamber was a part of WWE's annual February PPV (first called No Way Out, then simply named Elimination Chamber). During those years, the world title (or world titles) were sometimes on the line in the Chamber match(es), but other times, the Chamber was used to decide a WrestleMania title contender for the brand that didn't have the Royal Rumble winner. Now that the PPVs are split as well as the shows, that wouldn't be plausible this year without spoiling that a Raw star was winning the Rumble.

Elimination Chamber airs live on the WWE Network on Sunday, February 12 at 8:00 PM ET.
