WWE Invasion 2001: 5 Awesome Things And 5 That Sucked
2. Earl Hebner Against Nick Patrick Was A Bad Choice
Referees shouldn't have matches. With all due respect to them, fans don't care about referees having a match. It's especially bad when WWE has an event like Invasion and they chose to have a referee match on a stage as big as this. The story was that after the WCW guys showed up, the referees from those companies were not welcomed by the WWE guys. Who cares really? They could have played this up during an angle on TV and had a match there. Using precious PPV time to have this kind of match was completely unnecessary. It's not like this was presented like some great match, though. It was mostly done for comedy and the crowd actually cheered just because we're so used to refs not doing anything physical. What was also noteworthy was one of the WCW refs was Earl's son Brian Hebner although we didn't know that at the time. The best part of the match was that it was only about three minutes long and Hebner got the win after an awkward running shoulder tackle.
