WWE will return to its spiritual home of Madison Square Garden for the 10 September 2021 episode of SmackDown.

PWInsider's Mike Johnson broke the news on Thursday, confirming that the promotion will hit the World's Most Famous Arena for the first time since running a December 2019 house show there. On top of this, 10 September will be WWE's first televised event from MSG since September 2019, when Raw and SmackDown hit the building.

September 2019 ended a 10-year run of no WWE shows in Madison Square Garden. The building is of immense historical importance to the promotion, having served as the signature arena for both Vince McMahon Sr. and his son, with many a famous night held in the building.

WWE had planned on holding a live event at the Garden in March 2020, which this was cancelled at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. MSG was also rumoured as a potential SummerSlam 2021 venue earlier this year, though that show has since been confirmed for Las Vegas, Nevada.

The ROH/NJPW G1 Supercard is the biggest wrestling event to be held in MSG in recent years, with the show drawing over 16,000 fans in April 2019.
