WWE Road to Wrestlemania 29: The Undertaker Returns, CM Punk To Challenge The Streak

WWE Championship: The Rock (c) vs John Cena

With CM Punk now in the rear view mirror of both these men, the rematch everyone saw coming began in earnest on Monday night. The two men were in the ring together to talk about their upcoming rematch in New Jersey, and things got personal real quick. Cena spoke of how he had been waiting a year for the chance to take on The Rock again, and to gain redemption for last year's loss. He put over The Rock's achievements big time, and spoke of how his loss had sent his life into a tailspin, professionally and personally - which seemed a strangely placed reference to his very real-life divorce. The Rock of course said he only ever wanted to face Cena at Wrestlemania, and he knows what it means to him. The Rock certainly edged this promo with a great Lance Armstrong reference, but at its conclusion this was essentially just two men both saying they can beat the other, while at the same time patting each other on the back. It was hard to get invested in, and personally I hope they don't wait to get physical as they did last year. While the year long build-up last year had its moments, the match was in many ways a disappointment, and was probably behind The Undertaker v Triple H and CM Punk v Chris Jericho in terms of match of the night. But this year the build-up has been so clear all along, from The Rock returning to win the title, to Cena winning the Rumble on the same night, that they now need to kick it up a gear. The interactions between both men with CM Punk were on another level, and he really knew how to push their buttons, and now they need to bring that same fire into this feud. The interaction between the two men on Monday seemed tame however, as if they were afraid to offend each other, a problem you can get when pitting two babyfaces against each other. Cena being vulnerable is a good start, but he needs to mix that in with some genuine anger, some bitterness against The Rock. This man supposedly almost ruined your personal and professional life, stop being so damn nice to him John! The match itself should be better than last year's effort, with The Rock having the chance to shake off any ring rust against CM Punk and get himself into top form ready for the big dance. The WWE title strangely took a backseat this week to both The Undertaker and CM Punk storyline, and the Old School Raw, so expect it to kick up a gear next time The Rock appears on Raw. And on another note, wouldn't it be great, just for once, to see The Rock, the WWE Champion none the less, actually wrestle on Raw. Is that really too much to ask? Prediction: With all the talk of redemption, John Cena will take the win, and become the new WWE Champ.
