Since his walkout on 19 December, Dolph Ziggler has become a hotter talking point than he has been in years. Speculation as to what his abandoning of the United States Championship could mean for his career has been rife, with some seeing it as his gateway to retirement and others cynically branding it a desperate plea to generate interest in the flagging superstar.

Recently, another viewpoint has gained traction, that WWE are using this as an excuse to finally push the Show Off to the main event, a position he tasted only briefly in 2012. While it may seem odd for creative to finally show interest in Ziggler after he has been mishandled for years, one only needs to look as far back as late 2016, when his program with The Miz set the wrestling world on fire. His potentially career-ending match at No Mercy was very well received, with some championing it as the pay-per-view's main event in place of the dire Bray Wyatt/Randy Orton bout.

If Ziggler were to make a comeback at the Royal Rumble and go on to win the match, there's no doubt the fans would care. While he has unarguably floundered in recent years, he is still a beloved personality, and a brilliant worker. A match at WrestleMania with AJ Styles would be a treat, and could finally see the Show Off get the spotlight he has craved for a decade.
